Things He Said Today

By Joe Johnson, Beatle Brunch Host

You say you want a Revolution? Well, you know, Happy New Year Beatle Brunch listeners, ‘cause it’s time to ring out the “New” and ring in the “Old” in 2014. That means, we remember the success of Paul’s newest studio album from 2013, but look ahead to the 50th Anniversary Beatles’ celebrations coming our way in the next few weeks, like our warm, sun and surf celebration in Cancun next month, February 5-10th.

In last month’s newsletter, I asked you to tell me what the biggest, baddest Beatle related event of 2013 was and I got some really great responses. Here’s what Eileen Marston wrote:

I think the best Beatles event of 2013 was the release of the movie "Good Ol' Freda" in theatres and on-demand (and now on DVD).  I was lucky enough to attend a screening that included one of its producers, with a Q&A that followed the film.  It wasn't just a film for Beatles' fans about the Beatles; it was a film about Freda as a woman of her times - and an unusual woman of integrity, loyalty and humor.  I enjoyed "getting to know" her and also, of course, learning more about the years when the Beatles were together, from beginning to end.  The fact that she'd kept all these stories to herself all these years was truly remarkable. Other big events:  Ringo's book of his rare photographs and Paul's NEW album.
Thanks - and I hope I win a Beatle Brunch membership!

Well you did, Eileen! Congrats. Now you can hear every week’s Beatle Brunch ON DEMAND, plus Old Brown Shows, and you can chat with the BBC Scruffs every Sunday morning during the show plus take part in live celebrity chats (we wouldn’t chat with dead celebrities).  A special congrats to Michael Massey, who won a copy of “On Air: Live at the BBC Vol II” from UME just for writing in.

This year we’re looking forward to a non-stop invasion of 50th Anniversary Beatle events, beginning with all of the February 7-9th celebrations marking The Beatles arrival and first full national television exposure (they had been featured briefly on the CBS News as well as briefly on the Jack Paar Show). The Grammy telecast on CBS will pay tribute. That same weekend we’ll be re-creating The Ed Sullivan Show and featuring an actual Beatle: Pete Best, plus many other special guests in Cancun. Read the lineup and book this all inclusive now!

A week later we’ll move the party-party down to Mia-muh Beach to The Deauville Hotel, where The Beatles spent 8 days (a week?), and played their second Ed Sullivan Show live from the Napoleon Ballroom. This time, 1964 The Tribute will recreate the exact set The Beatles played from that stage, plus rock us for another hour with more Fab tunes. We’ll be joined by John’s half sister, Julia Baird, who will sign autographs and pose for pics with fans. So please make your reservation now, seating is limited, call 877-733-3130 or go to Believe 1964 in 2014.

In 2014 we’ll also mark the 50th of “A Hard Day’s Night”, The Boys having the Top 5 songs on the U.S. Chart, The Beatles’ First U.S. Tour and many other landmark Beatle events, so keep it tuned to your Beatle Brunch radio station. Better yet, Join The Beatle Brunch Club and hear every week’s show ON DEMAND, commercial free, on your schedule. Download it to your computer or smartphone, but don’t miss a Beat of Beatle Brunch in 2014. Make a New Year’s Revolution that will stick.

BTW if you were at the first Ed Sullivan Show in New York City February 9th, 1964 CBS wants to hear from you. Send an e-mail edition4@comcast.net.

Who's Number 1
Submitted By Tee Eff from Rolling Stone Magazine

Paul McCartney's excellent New year just got even better: He has earned the Number One spot on Billboard's final Hot Tours ranking of 2013, racking up $40.6 million in ticket sales from the final six shows of his Out There! Tour.
As Billboard reports, the tour's final leg took place in Japan, where McCartney hadn't performed in 11 years. The Japanese stint (which followed treks in North and South America, as well as Europe) featured two nights of performances in Osaka November 11 and 12; those shows, held at the 50,000-seater Kyocera Dome, sold over 71,000 tickets total. The final dates (November 18, 19 and 21 at the Tokyo Dome) marked the former Beatle's first gigs in that city since 2002; all three shows were sell-outs, earning a total of $23.4 million.
McCartney may have dominated the touring circuit in 2013 (and earned Number Four on Rolling Stone's year-end album list with his latest LP, New). Overall, he basically demolished the competition in Billboard's final Hot Tours ranking.

Original Air Date - November 7, 1993 - “The Beatles Without The Beatles” - If you're a BBC Member listen to the songs, “She’s Leaving Home” and “Eleanor Rigby” and hear what The Beatles sounded like when they put down their instruments, picked up the phone and got “a little help from their friends” on some of their most famous hits.
