Things He Said Today

By Joe Johnson, Beatle Brunch Host

2013 is almost a memory. The year will be over in just a few short weeks. Time to ring out the old and ring in the new. But the new is really the old, as we’re about to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Beatles invasion of America. It all began when they landed at Kennedy airport on February 7th, 1964.

We’ve got SO many celebrations planned in 2014 that we want you to roll up your Magical Mystery Tour sleeves right now.  For starters, while the rest of America will be freezing their beetles off in February, Ask Me Why I won’t. Ok, I’ll tell you. I’ll be celebrating with original Beatle Pete Best and our Beatle Brunch pals Laurence Juber and Denny Seiwell of Wings, Tim Piper as John Lennon and The Band on the Run band in sunny Cancun, February 5th-10th for one all-inclusive price. Come along, because all of your meals, your drinks, your room and your entertainment is covered for one low price. So warm up to the idea and join me for the ultimate Beatles’ celebration. It’s just two months away. Book now by calling Angela at Music n’ Motion at 877-291-1952.

Second, we’ll be hot, hot, hot in Miami on the exact 50th anniversary of when The Beatles played The Deauville Hotel on Miami Beach, from the same stage, the same weekend, 50 years to the day, February 15-16, 2014. The special weekend of Beatles music and memories will be celebrated by 1964 The Tribute, with a Saturday show and banquet and a second Sunday show on the exact day from the exact stage in the exact room The Beatles played: The Napoleon Room, which looks just the way it did back then. Book your tickets starting at just $64. Order Your Tickets NOW. Sorry, the exciting Mitzi Gaynor won’t be in attendance, but we have it on the lamb that some very special guests will also be staying in the hotel that weekend.

Then, on the third weekend of February, we’ll be warming up once again to The Fab Faux, the band that plays the most intricate Beatles songs, ones they never performed live, including complete Beatle albums like The White Album, in order. You must join us at The Parker Playhouse for Will Lee and The Fab Faux, February 22nd. Get your tickets at https://www.parkerplayhouse.com. I’ll be hosting the concert. Hope to see you at all of these amazing Beatle events.

In closing, as we get ready wrap up 2013, I’d like to know what you think the biggest, baddest Beatle-related event in 2013 was. Let me know, and I’ll post your responses in next month’s newsletter. You might even win a year-long Beatle Brunch Club membership!  So send an email to me @ brunchradio@bellsouth.net.  Have a Happy Crimble and a Merry New Year!

My Sweet George, We Miss You

Just a few days ago, we sent our thoughts and prayers out to Olivia and Dhani Harrison as we marked the 12th anniversary of the passing of George Harrison, who left us on November 29th, 2001.  We miss you George, and we’re so thankful that we have your music and memories to keep us company. We’re also thankful that we have Paul and Ringo, still playing, singing, writing and releasing new music and books for us to enjoy. Paul just wrapped up his “Out There” tour by visiting Japan to record crowds once again, and Ringo and his All Starr Band finished up the year in Las Vegas where he was joined by “The Kids in the Photo” from 1964.  2014 is about to come in like a lion and we can’t “Wait” till we come back to your door.

Las Ringo's Vegas
By Tee Eff

Wrapping up what is an unprecedented third leg of a world tour with his All Starr Band, Ringo Starr brought things full circle with two U.S. shows in Las Vegas November 22-23 at the Pearl Concert Theater at the Palms Casino Resort. Given the jam packed two day agenda, there wasn’t much time for Ringo to be hitting the tables.

On Friday (November 22), the news was dominated with 50th anniversary coverage of the JFK assassination and memorials taking place throughout the country. Far less coverage was given to the fact that it was also the 50th anniversary of the release of the Beatles second album With The Beatles, but that didn’t mean Ringo wasn’t in the news.

Our favorite drummer chose the Vegas stop to promote his new collector’s edition book Photograph with a two day public exhibit at the Palms, capitalizing on the publicity campaign around “the kids in the car”, duly named for a featured photo taken by Starr that is included in the book. Mainstream media, most notably USA Today, championed a campaign to identify the then-teenagers snapped by Ringo in 1964. Having identified the lot as students of Fair Lawn (let’s hear it for New Jersey !) High School, a meeting was arranged between “the kids” (now in their late 60’s) and Ringo, who arranged a private meeting for them with the cast of the long-running Cirque du Soleil Beatles LOVE show.

That evening’s All Starr Band concert found the troupe in peak form, fresh off their early autumn jaunt through South America and Mexico (earlier in the year, the band visited the Pacific Rim, including shows in Australia, New Zealand and Japan). The set list was only slightly different than it was for the initial U.S. leg last summer, with “Honey Don’t” replacing “I’m The Greatest” (as was done on the Pacific Rim dates) and Gregg Rolie swapping out Santana’s “Everybody’s Everything” for “Oye Como Va” (a change made during the South American leg).

On Saturday (November 23), the Photograph exhibit was closed for about an hour for a private / press event with Ringo showing pictures from the book and posing with the “kids in the car”. The event itself was very brief (only about 20 minutes), with Ringo accompanied by Gregg Bissonette and Mark Rivera from the All Starr Band. In the evening, the “kids” were guests of honor at the LOVE show, while Ringo and the band performed the final show of the tour. All Starr Band alumnus Nils Lofgren (class of 1989 and 1992) joined in for the “With A Little Help From My Friends” / “Give Peace A Chance” finale.

It was easy to see why Ringo went out three times with this band. Having seen each and every All Starr tour since 1989, I can say with 100% certainty that this is the lineup that he seemed to have the most fun with. Yes, there have been bigger names, and bigger songs, along the way. But as a “band”, this ensemble totally gelled. Steve Lukather’s magical guitar solos on Gregg Rolie’s Santana tracks, and Mark Rivera taking the high vocals on Lukather’s Toto hits were just two of the many examples of how well the band members complemented each other. Check out the Ringo at the Ryman DVD for more examples, along with an unforgettable guest appearance from Joe Walsh. Definitely a stand out among the many All Starr CD and DVD releases from the past (can it be?) quarter century.

We Must Come Together
By Margot Winick

What the world needs now - The Beatles - because their message is in the music!
“When I find myself in times of trouble-” Indeed, when we experience tragic events, such as the recent devastation by Typhoon Haiyan in the Phillippines, music can heal – and help. And when the world needs to come together for a good cause, the music of The Beatles touches our hearts and opens up our empathy to those like us who must carry that weight.

The Beatles will bookend a new 39-song compilation called “Songs for the Phillippines,” which begins with “Across the Universe” as Track 1, and closes with “Let it Be,” Track 39. In between are cuts from some of music business names, from Bob Dylan and Katy Perry to Michael Buble and One Direction.

Benefiting the Phillippines Red Cross to help the over 14 million people impacted by the November 8 storm, which killed more than 5,600 and left 1,757 missing, including more than a million children, the album was compiled by Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group, and is available now on iTunes for $9.99.

Last January, following the tragic Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting, “Beatle Brunch” Radio Show dedicated an entire program to showcasing the universality of love for the music of The Beatles among young people.
