Things He Said Today

By Joe Johnson

Fall is officially upon us, a traditional time for The Beatles where their new releases, single and albums would arrive at the stores.  We have a bit of the same, but it’s not a windfall, but more of a breezy fall.

To celebrate John’s birthday next week, a new book is coming out that features personal cards and letters John wrote to friends and family over the years, very similar to Ringo’s "Postcards From the Boys" several years back, but this time, these cards were sent out, while Ringo’s collection was of those he received, including many touching ones from John.  "The John Lennon Letters" by Hunter Davies is due out Tuesday October 9, 2012.

Also due out on John’s birthday is the revamped "Magical Mystery Tour."  I’ll be featuring it on the October 14th edition of Beatle Brunch, and here’s a mini review:  I like it.  Not so much the film, but it’s wonderful to see the Boys adlib and interact with each other and strangers on a bus, and in a field. Yeah, the premise is a bit flimsy but let’s not forget that now the soundtrack, dialog and music, has been greatly enhanced plus the experience of hanging out with The Beatles is a gas.  The bonus features on the DVD run about two hours.  There’s a Director’s track with commentary by Paul who’s watching the film and giving his recollections, many we’ve heard over the years, but we’re blessed there are a few new ones including the background on Flying, their instrumental from the film.

There’s a making of a featurette in which we learn that the sequence for "Your Mother Should Know" was delayed for five hours by a massive power outage, and how they had to bribe the dancers to stay by promising them autographed pictures of The Beatles, which turned out to be a free for all.  I enjoyed the “Ringo the Actor” segment with Ringo’s recollections of Aunt Jessie and outtakes in the film.  You can also see "Meet the Supporting Cast" watch the "Your Mother Should Know" sequence and George playing along to Blue Jay Way.

So though you may not care for "Magical Mystery Tour," this one is a nice addition to your home Beatle closet, and  you’ll have a chance to WIN yours on the October 14th Beatle Brunch.

Other Fall releases include "Paul’s Live Kisses" due out November 12th that features the live playing of "Kisses on the Bottom" that recently aired on PBS.  A 13-track DVD that also includes tons of bonus material.  There’s also a nice little holiday tune that Paul’s recorded in the same style, which you’ll hear on an upcoming Brunch, thanks to Tom Frangione, oh, and Paul’s added some new dates to his On the Run tour. Check Beatle Brunch Club News for the info.

Well, that’s it for this edition, except to say that I’ve been listening through the Old Brown Shows, those Beatle Brunch Classics from “20 years ago today” (in some cases) and loading them up on The Beatle Brunch Club (you should JOIN!!) The criteria for OBS’s is to find those in which the theme or focus, is not something I’ve done lately, like "Beatle Ballads," which is going up next on The BBC.
So, thanks for listening and reading!  Remember, a membership in The Beatle Brunch Club makes a great gift. E-mail Donnie@BrunchRadio.com for details on how to do that; and of course, all active BBC'ers including our registered Beatle Brunch Family Members are in the drawing for the amazing Benson book, which you can read about in this Newsletter!
Cheers and many OctoberFest Beers!

Paul 'KISSES' All

Relive The Magic Of One Of Paul's Most Intimate Concerts Ever As He Performs Standards From His Critically Acclaimed Album 'Kisses On The Bottom' - the DVD, Blu-Ray and Digital Video release slated for November 12, 2012. The package includes spectacular concert footage with a cast of top-flight musicians, exclusive promo videos directed by Paul himself, behind the scenes interviews and a 40 page hardback book featuring an extensive collection of photographs from the event and rehearsals.

November 12th will see the release of 'Live Kisses' - a stunning 13-song film, directed by Jonas Åkerlund, that captures the magic of an extraordinary evening in February of this year. In the intimate surroundings of Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, where Paul recorded much of his 'Kisses On The Bottom' album, he was reunited with the all-star musicians who joined him on the record to bring the songs to life for a once in a lifetime performance.

This was a concert unlike any Paul had given before. Without his famous Höfner bass in hand or in fact any musical instruments, Paul took his place behind the same microphone that has captured some of the most iconic voices in history to focus on his vocal delivery as he led the assembled A-list group of musicians through a collection of the standards he grew up listening to in his childhood, as well as his own original composition 'My Valentine'.

Streamed live to the world online, 'Live Kisses' marked the launch of Paul's 'Kisses On The Bottom' album. The film tells the story of how, with the help of Grammy Award-winning producer Tommy LiPuma, Diana Krall and her band, Paul created a critically acclaimed album, which featured guest appearances from Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder. The record represents a deeply personal journey through classic American compositions that a young Paul first heard his father perform on piano at home. Upon its release 'Kisses…' topped the US Billboard Jazz album chart at number 1, as well as charting top 5 all around the world.

On the night the all-star line up were reunited to include musical director Diana Krall (piano), John Clayton (bass), Karriem Riggins (drums), John Pizzarelli (guitar), Anthony Wilson (guitar), Mike Mainieri (vibraphone) and conductor Alan Broadbent. Tommy LiPuma and Al Schmitt resumed their roles in the studio and special guest musicians on the evening included Abe Laboriel Jr (from Paul's touring band) on backing vocals and Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh. Walsh performed the 'My Valentine' guitar solo originally recorded by Eric Clapton on the studio album.

The concert was performed just hours after Paul brought Vine Street in LA to a standstill as he was presented with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in front of the Capitol Records Building. The night of the concert (February 9th) was also the 48th anniversary of The Beatles' U.S. TV debut on The Ed Sullivan Show.

Bonus 'Live Kisses' material includes six versions of the 'My Valentine' music video, directed by Paul and starring Johnny Depp and Natalie Portman as well as a 'Making My Valentine' film. There are also two short films with behind the scenes footage filmed at the Mary McCartney album photoshoot for 'Kisses On The Bottom'. The final extra is an interview with Paul and producer Tommy LiPuma talking about the story of the album, its conception and creation.

'Live Kisses' is an intimate and charming concert film which offers an insight into the music and songwriters that inspired Paul to go on to become the most successful songwriter and performer in modern history. Beautifully presented, 'Live Kisses' comes with a 40-page hardback book containing photographs from the day itself, including the rehearsals.
