I've Just Seen a Face

Beatle Brunch and The Beatle Brunch Club websites are undergoing a few changes.  You may experience trouble connecting, but it’s only temporary.

We are transferring to a new server and while the move is taking place as swiftly as possible we are following through on many of the cool suggestions you’ve sent to us.  And in the end a new website will emerge that’s equal to the site you’ve come to love. The Awesome is always on the house when you Live The Culture.

Imagine! Paul Does it Again!
Sir Paul has a new Madam, Nancy Shevell.  They were married Sunday, October 9th (John Lennon’s birthday), at the same place he and Linda were married 42 years ago. Paul and Nancy became man and wife in front of just 30 guests at Marylebone Register Office. Among those spotted, ABC News and host of The View, Barbara Walters, along with Paul’s immediate family.  The bride wore a demure ivory knee-length gown, thought to be designed by Paul's daughter Stella, which boasted button detail down the front and on the sleeves, while the groom in a tux with a pale blue tie, clutched her hand on the way out of the Marylebone Registrar’s office as white rose pedals rained down from above. Paul’s younger brother Michael was Best Man while daughter Beatrice Millie acted as flower girl. The couple then headed off to Paul’s house in St. John’s Wood for a reception. News reports say they will repeat the feat in New York with a reception at Paul’s house in The Hamptons.

My Sweet George
By Joe J.
Beatle Brunch received copies of  “George Harrison Living in the Material World” the companion book to the film that aired on HBO October 5th and 6th. What an amazing look at the life of George Harrison through hundreds of never-before-seen photos, many taken by his own camera, plus copies of his letters sent home and to his sister Louise. There are also letters written by John Lennon and hand-written lyrics to many of his solo songs.
The 393 page portrait of George, paints a picture of an artist who possessed the world at age 21 and became transformed.  What it also shows is that George transformed the world with his the world’s first charity concert (The Concert for Bangladesh), his world renowned “All Things Must Pass” triple album, and his love for Indian music and the friends for life (and afterlife) he met on his journey.
In the book son Dhani helps to sum up George’s life by saying he was really a “gardner” who spent 12-14 hours working in the lush gardens of his Henley on Thames mansion outside of London.   One of the great stories Dhani tells is his recollection of a day he came home from school being chased by classmates who were singing “Yellow Submarine” and he didn’t understand why. He freaked out to his dad, “Why didn’t you tell me you were in The Beatles?”  And George replied, “Oh, sorry. Probably should have told you that.”

Things He Said Today
By Joe J.

Well, it’s officially Fall on the Brunch and we’re excited about what the holiday season means to Beatles fans.  Paul’s about to tie the knot with Nancy, (they have registered at the Marlybone Registrars office in London). Nancy looked Fab at opening night of “Ocean’s Kingdom”, the New York City Ballet performance that took place two weeks ago.  We have the CD’s of the four symphonic pieces that Paul wrote for the ballet, so listen to win‘em by playing Mind Games and Club members can hear‘em now on the BBC Download Page.
In other Beatle news, we just received the new George Harrison books, “Living in the Material World”, a companion to the two-night HBO documentary.  Wait until you see this book, breath-taking photos, many never before seen, from George’s private archives.  Olivia Harrison told The New York Times that George just “tossed photos and cassettes into drawers all over the house”.  She collected them and passed them along to Martin Scorsese and others to be included in the book and film. We can’t wait for October 5th.  Check out my book review in this newsletter.   Of course fans are scratching their heads in disbelief that there is no DVD of the film planned for release any time soon in the U.S., but you can get the UK edition from Amazon along with a CD of George’s music, with bonus tracks.

Listen, do you want to know a secret?  We just moved our Beatle Brunch & BBC site to a new server, so bear with us as we work out the bugs (read: Beatles) over the next week or less.  There will be problems registering for our newsletter and playing Mind Games, but we’re doing the best we can and full speed ahead. We’re following a few of your excellent suggestions and pushing to get more flexibility from the site, like being able to download each week’s Beatle Brunch instead of just listening to it, and adding more storage space so we can archive more shows, including “Beatle Brunch Classics” from our nearly 20 years on the air. Thanks for your continued support and patience.

And one more personal note: Can’t wait for our Beatles Tribute Cruise!  We’d just about sold out space on the ship, when Royal Caribbean opened up more cabins for Beatle Brunch listeners at a reduced rate.  This cruise is going to be rockin’ with our fans on board and our special guests, BUT, if you have a special Beatle lover in your life, how about booking a cabin now and saving the tickets as a holiday gift?  Of course you get to come along too, so it’s a gift that also gives to you!   Remember, the cruise is on RCL’s Oasis of the Seas, THE MOST amazing ship ever.  I saw the itinerary, but I don’t’ care if I ever leave this ship!

Have a great Octoberfest Beatle Brunch fans, and remember you can follow Beatle Brunch on Twitter and “like” us on Facebook too.

See you on the radio!

A Hard Day’s Night
By Ray Morton

United Artists wanted to make a quick, low-budget film starring the Fab Four so that its record division could put out a motion picture soundtrack. They got a fresh movie that broke new ground in both subject and plot, plus 7 new Beatles songs.

This book is the full story of the making of the greatest rock-and-roll movie of all time. With introductions of the film’s stars, the rise of Beatlemania, the film’s frantic six-week shoot, and how both the film and album met with great critical and popular success.

Ray will personally autograph copies of his new book and lucky Beatle Brunch fans will get the chance to win one.

Beatles 50th Anniversary

To The Nines
By Bruce Spizer

The number 9 has followed John Lennon since his birth, on October 9, 1940. The first four years of his life were spent in a home located at 9 Newcastle Road. The group’s first record, “Love Me Do,” had the catalog number 4949. One of the early songs written by John and Paul was “One After 909.” John’s sound collage on “The White Album” was titled “Revolution No. 9” and contained a sound loop of a voice saying “Number nine, number nine, number nine.” John’s ninth album after leaving the Beatles, released in the U.S. during the ninth month of 1974, contained a song titled “#9 Dream,” which when released as a single peaked at number nine in the Billboard Hot 100.  John’s son Sean was born on October 9, 1975.  Although John was shot in New York City on December 8, 1980, at the time of his death it was December 9 in Liverpool, the city where he was born.

And so as we celebrate the life of John Lennon on his birthday of October 9, let us also pay tribute to the Beatles first record, “Love Me Do,” released 49 years ago on Parlophone 4949 on October 5, 1962. “Number nine, number nine, number nine.”

On John Lennon’s 71st Birthday
By Jeff Walker

Suppose Lennon’s assassin, whom Paul McCartney refers to as “the jerk of all jerks,” had missed his target on December 8, 1980, and was then jailed for attempted murder. And suppose John managed to quit smoking in his early 40s and avoid the kind of cancer that took George’s life in 2002.

What would we have seen, and more importantly, have heard from John Lennon in the 1980s, ‘90s and the double o’s? That’s a tough call.
