Things He Said Today

A Letter from Beatle Brunch Host, Joe Johnson

What a summer it’s been once again for Beatle fans. Paul is knocking it out of all the parks he’s been playing this summer, most notably Yankee Stadium, where he debuted “The Night Before” for the first time since it was recorded in 1965. See the performance in the video downloads section of The Beatle Brunch Club. I’m looking forward to seeing all my friends from the Midwest this coming weekend in Chicago for The Fest for Beatles Fans annual celebration. I’ll be hosting, along with Tom Frangione, “Name That Beatle Tune” for amazing Brunch prizes, like Billy Joel’s “Live at Shea Stadium” CD / DVD, Paul’s remastered “McCartney” and “McCartney II”, plus tons of Beatle books, posters and DVDs, so join me, won’t you? Of course, if you drop by The Beatle Brunch table, we’ll record you for an upcoming Beatle Brunch program to air later this month nationwide. And as a special gift, anyone who joins The Beatle Brunch Club at our fest table will get a free Beatle book or similar prize, worth the price of membership, so THIS is the THE weekend to join! Come on by the Brunch table, take some photos with us and make a request! Plus join me and Brunch contributor and Beatlefan writer Al Sussman as we talk about Beatles Radio, in a special “Beatles and Bagels” presentation Sunday morning at 11:30 at The Fest. I can’t believe that it’s been 40 years since the world’s first benefit concert. Listen the weekend of August 6th to hear a special edition of Beatle Brunch paying tribute to “The Concert for Bangladesh” with my exclusive interview with Olivia Harrison and great songs and stories from the show, plus you can win the remastered CFB CDs from Capitol EMI. The following week, it’s our anniversary of Shea Beatle Brunch, with a special visit to Billy Joel’s “The Last Play at Shea” film, where Billy and Paul tell the story on how they came together for the last show at Shea. Plus, the movie company has given us a limited amount of the DVDs to give away, so listen and win in our Mind Games contest.

Have a great remaining summer and mark your calendar to look for us at the Chicago Fest!

All The Beatle Best,

Joe J

Oasis, Super Bowl & The BTC

The Beatles Tribute Cruise 2012 promises to be an incredible event, and if you ever thought about cruising, this is the way to go. Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas is one helluva luxurious cruise ship. Frankly, we have never seen anything like it. There are so many things you can enjoy while on board, it really doesn’t matter if the ship leaves the port, but visiting the Western Caribbean just adds another dimension to the excitement making it a brilliant adventure. Joe Johnson, Tony Bramwell, Laurence Juber and Mark Hudson are thrilled to be a part of it. They can’t wait to entertain you. In addition, the boys in The Beatles Tribute, Revolution, are gearing up for a week long party with the Beatle Brunch gang. Tim Piper who plays John Lennon in the band will perform a special gig just for the BTC group. Joe J. and Company will reminisce about the Beatles performance on the Ed Sullivan Show; “L J” and his magical finger picking talent will astound you; Hudson’s extra splash of concert color will crack you up, and Bramwell’s stories and videos will absolutely amaze you. So, don’t miss the boat, call Angela from Music iN M'Ocean at 877-291-1952 and book your reservations. Ask her for a Beatle Brunch Treat.

The Best of BTCruisers

Woody Lifton, writes:
During the past two years my two favorite Beatles events were the Beatles Tribute Cruises hosted by Joe Johnson of Beatle Brunch. Oh, I've been to the Fest and other Beatles events but this one simply blows them all away. In 2010 we spent 6 nights in the Caribbean aboard Royal Caribbean's Independence of the Seas along with May Pang, Nancy Lee Andrews, Paul Saltzman, Shannon, Jorie Gracen and BritBeat. This was an incredibly fun cruise on the most luxurious cruise ship I had ever been on. We stopped at Cozumel Mexico, Costa Maya and Belize City all great ports with plenty of items to shop for and great restaurants for us to get a drink or two, but the best part was the Beatles activities and special guests. BritBeat played 4 concerts, there were Q & A sessions with May, Nancy, Jorie and Paul and Shannon unveiled 8 paintings from her "Hard Days Night Hotel Collection". I walked off that ship with my head in the clouds and friendships with a great bunch of Beatles fans and the special Beatles guests. I still stay in touch with all of them. Getting on board the Liberty of the Seas for Beatles Tribute Cruise 2011, I thought to myself "How the hell are these people going to top last year's BTC?" Well they did. This time we cruised for 8 nights with stops in St. Thomas, St Martin, San Juan and the exotic private island of Labadee. The special guests were Laurence Juber, Tony Bramwell, Tony Perkins, Shannon, Joe Johnson and YESTERDAY. Getting the chance to see Laurence Juber in TWO private concerts was simply amazing and hanging out with Tony Bramwell in the bars each night, talking Beatles, was a real highlight. We saw films from Tony Perkins, Shannon, Tony Bramwell and had a special viewing of LET HIM BE, This cruise was just as much fun and the ship was just as nice. I had such a great time I can't wait for BTC 2012 on the OASIS of the SEAS - that's supposed to be the best ship in the world.

Joshua Lapin-Bertone, writes:
What is your favorite experience as a Beatles fan? Was it a concert? A chance meeting with your favorite Beatle or Beatle related person? Was it simply the first magical time you heard your favorite Beatles song on Joe Johnson's Beatle Brunch? For me, it could only be my experience on the 2010 and 2011 Beatles Tribute Cruises. As a Beatles fan, they really were dreams come true. Growing up I devoured Beatle books by Tony Bramwell and May Pang. These people are more famous to me than any Lady Gaga or Jonas Brother. Meeting them and hearing them speak of their experiences was well worth the price of admission. Being able to hang out with them at the pool, casino and dinner was also a very good bonus. This is not like conventions where you might get to spend two minutes with talent. By the end of the cruise bonds and friendships are formed. In addition to insiders like May and Tony, there was the great Beatles artist Shannon and some great tribute groups. I can’t even name all the awesome Beatles people I’ve gotten to know better because of the cruises! It was also a great communal experience with other Beatle fans, many of whom have become my lifelong friends. I’ll never forget talking photography with Nancy Andrews, or having dinner with Tony Perkins, seeing Laurence Juber give private guitar lessons and doing all this while enjoying a luxury cruise. Conventions are fun, but they are crowded and you don’t get to take as much away from them. When I went on the Beatles Tribute Cruise, I left with great friendships, awesome Beatles merchandise (everyone wins a prize) and great tan! Forget the conventions, fests and small tribute concerts. Splurge on the Beatles Tribute Cruise 2012 and you may be calling it your favorite experience as a Beatles fan as well! I for one won't miss it.

Spotlight on BBC'er Jim Blue

The Beatle Brunch Club sports a few talented members who enjoy interacting with our terrific community of Beatles fans. We want everyone to know what Clublife is all about and Jim's story tells it best. Live The Culture and JOIN The BBC.

It was undoubtedly the most defining moment in my life ... 1963. I remember the room I was in, the radio, the second hand book case the radio was placed on, even the lighting in the room. "I Want To Hold Your Hand", the most amazingly memorable song I had ever heard, was being sung by a band with what seemed to be a strange name at the time - The Beatles. I had never heard anything like it. The chorus stuck in my mind like velcro. I heard the song once and couldn't stop it from playing in my brain. I didn't want to stop it! And then, soon after that, seeing The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show, so hypnotized by their performance that I totally blocked out my parent's snide comments about their hair, their soaring falsetto, and the way they shook their heads when they sang. I was hooked. I knew what I had to do. My mother had a beat up old steel string acoustic guitar she used to play stored in the attic. I dusted it off and several times tried desperately to play the thick, rusty strings but after a week or so gave up on it. Fortunately for me, my brother Charlie, who was a professional guitarist went into the navy and left his Fender MusicMaster electric guitar and Gibson amp behind for me to "borrow."
My best friend Bob had a pair of drumsticks and we jammed together for months. His drumset at the time was several books arranged so they simulated a drumset. Bob's dad recognized his talent and thought we sounded pretty good together so he bought Bob a brand new Ludwig drum kit. To us, we sounded awesome just as a twosome. No vocals, just guitar and drums, but it wasn't long before we added other members to complete the lineup of our first band, The Outcasts. Our band soon became popular so my parents lent me the money to buy my dream setup. A sunburst Fender Jaguar electric guitar and a Fender Twin Reverb amp. Soon after, I invested the cash from a paying gig in a stylin' pair of green, blue, and red paisley bell-bottoms that my fellow "Outcasts" nicknamed my vegetable pants. I think they were just jealous! ;-) Learning my favorite songs on the radio was always easy for me because I was born with near perfect pitch and the ability to learn songs by ear. I did take guitar lessons and learned how to read music. Learning to sight read was especially challenging because, after playing a song once, I typically would know it almost by heart. All of the local guitar teacher's lessons revolved around the typical Mel Bay style methods so I stopped taking lessons. I did my own research and began teaching myself sight reading using the guitar methods authored by William Leavitt of the Berklee College of Music. His lessons offered less predictable note and chord patterns that worked perfect for me. Over the years I've played thousands of gigs in top notch bands touring across the United States and abroad as lead guitarist and vocalist. I've collaboration with writers, producers, and publishers around the world. I write, perform, and sing all of my originals, and I record and produce them in my studio. Yes, The Beatles definitely changed the course of my life and they continue to. Throughout the years I've never lost the vision that the Beatles brought into perfect focus for me. My unquenchable desire to play music and to drink from the universal river of creativity. To that end, I have continued to hone my musical and songwriting craft and can honestly say that I am a better songwriter, singer, and guitarist now than I ever have been at any point in my life. It has been said that luck is when preparation meets opportunity. I am prepared. So, whenever the opportunity to make music comes my way, I am always ready to fulfill the dream that was inspired so many years ago by my most favorite band of all time, The Beatles.
