Beatle Books
It took me years to write, will you take a look...
|
40 years after the release of the iconic Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts
Club Band, the Beatles continue to captivate music fans of all ages.
There's something always more to discuss about the Fab Four. What
were their greatest live performances? Their worst moments? Stories
still unknown by most music fans, trends still unseen, history still
uninterpreted are all revealed in Fab Four FAQ. Pop culture authors
Stuart Shea and Rob Rodriguez provide must-know fan trivia and offer
obscure Beatles facts and stories in an easy-to-read, provocative
format that will start as many arguments as will end them. With
more than sixty chapters of stories, history, observation, and opinion,
Fab Four FAQ lays bare the whys and wherefores that made the Beatles
so great, giving credit where credit is due and maybe bursting some
bubbles along the way. Authors: Robert Rodriguez and Stuart Shea

In this book, Paul McCartney the most prolific
member of The Beatles, founder of Wings and enduring solo artist
speaks in his own words of his private life, his life as
a singer, musician, composer and businessman, of how the greatest
band in the world came to be, and how and why they broke up. Paul
McCartney Now & Then is the inside story from the man himself.
Includes commentary from Sir George Martin, Steve Miller,
Pete Best, Brian Wilson, Peter Asher and others.
Complimented throughout by rare, many previously unseen photos shot
over a career spanning more than four decades. Robin Bextor
is a well-known documentary film maker and writer who has formed
a close relationship with Paul McCartney over the years. Tony
Barrow, who coined the phrase Fab Four, was head
of The Beatles' Press Office from 1962-1968.

It features hundreds of photos shot by Pauls
personal photographer Bill Bernstein, who brings fans everywhere
with Paul, from the sad moments after 9/11 to the Tribute to America
concert at MSG and all around the world, including Red Square.
The book is published by Chronicle
Books and most of the photos have never been shown publicly
before. While there have been dozens of books on The Beatles tours
and even Pauls tours, this is the first time that Paul himself
has been involved in the production. He
contributed the written copy that accompanies each section and even
wrote the clever song-headlines that open each new city on the tour.
Paul McCartney, WW Norton Books
Paul McCartney's new book of poems. Edited by Adrian Mitchell, this
first collection brings together early and late poems, along with
some of Sir Paul's greatest poems, the songs he wrote with The Beatles,
including "Yesterday," "Maxwell's Silver Hammer,"
"Penny Lane," and "Hey Jude." Although some
of the lyrics seem naked without hearing The Beatles music behind
them, by reading this book you will learn what it is really like
to think like one of the biggest geniuses in the music business.
There are never-before published poems to Paul's
childhood friend, Ivan Vaughan, who shared the same birthday
as Paul; Paul's writing partner, John Lennon and Paul's late wife,
Linda, that are tender, sparse, and startlingly honest
Jorie Gracen-Vetern
Photographer Jorie Gracen has spent the last 2
1/2 decades attending Paul McCartney concerts and events. She's
traveled the world to photograph Paul and has compiled a fascinating
book of photos of Paul on tour, beginning with his early Wings days
right up to his most recent tour. All of the photos are documented
as to which show it was taken at, and most include a story or memory
associated with that particular show, written by Gracen and Macca
fans. Beatle Brunch's Joe Johnson has contributed two stories and
quotes from two of Paul's press conferences in Miami and Orlando.
Paul fans will find this fun reading and great memories of Paul's
touring dates. 176 Pages. Hardcover. You may have noticed one of
Jorie's photos in the CD booklet of Paul's "Tripping the Live
Fantastic" live set..

A friend of George Harrison offers informed reflections
on the late musician's spiritual quest.
Author and film producer Joshua Greene
focuses on the metaphysical in his examination of George Harrison,
choosing to document the Beatle's relationship with Hindu philosophy
and Krishna devotees over his more complexthough admittedly
well-coveredrelationship with his bandmates.
Out of the insanity, claustrophobia and estrangement
that came with being a member of the Beatles, Harrison emerged an
affected man, in search of God and peace. Filmmaker/biographer Greene
portrays his friend as introspective and modest, inspired by an
experience with LSD ("From that moment on, I wanted to have
that depth and clarity of perception," Harrison told Rolling
Stone.) Harrison reached beyond intoxicants into the bliss of yoga
and cosmic chants, a buzz that took him "into the astral plane."
He wanted others to share his contact with the mystical and spoke
of his spirituality during concerts, where his comments were met
with, at best, indifference.
Though he spent considerable time exploring the
Hindu religion, writes Greene, the musician was a restless quester,
always looking for ways to put his spiritual house in order. Greene
writes of a newfound "levelheaded dispassion" as Harrison
moved into his sixth decade, a sense of liberation from the material
world coupled with an affirmation of nature and a personal recognition
of his place in the scheme of things. Greene presents a man deeply
engaged in the world he longed to transcend. -
Publishers Weekly

Far from being the quiet one, George Harrison
was a writer and arranger of terrific power and beauty, and his
guitar playing was fundamental to the Beatles' sound and success.
Now fully revised and expanded, this new edition of
While My Guitar Gently Weeps: The Music of George Harrison
is the most comprehensive evaluation of George Harrison's musical
career ever published. Treating each of Harrison's songs with unprecedented
analysis, author Simon Leng reveals Harrison's eclectic approach
from teenage Nashville twang through Indian raga, psychedelia,
gospel, soul, and pure pop and thoroughly defines Harrison's
role in the Beatles. First-hand accounts of the Concert
for Bangladesh and the making of All Things Must Pass
take the reader deep into the most fertile and controversial periods
of Harrison's long solo career that culminated with Brainwashed.
Enhanced with insights from key figures who worked closely with
Harrison throughout his extraordinary career, this book is a remarkably
stirring study and portrait of a great artist whose musical and
spiritual quest changed the lives of millions of people around the
world while redefining popular music and rock 'n' roll.
George Harrison
Cherished by fans and collectors, I Me Mine is the closest
we will come to George Harrison's autobiography. It is "a sly
paradox of a title," to quote Derek Taylor, The Beatles's
spokesperson, "chosen by a man concerned for many years and
for many reasons to send his ego packing ... a book which tells
a story of growing up, not necessarily the hard way, but certainly
not the easy way." Featuring George in conversation with Derek
Taylor, it touches on everything from growing up in Liverpool and
early Beatlemania to his love of India, gardening, and race cars.
Originally published in 1980 and now including
a new introduction by Olivia Harrison, "I Me Mine"
is also a compendium of the lyrics to over 80 of George's songs,
many in his own hand, all accompanied by his uniquely intimate and
humorous commentary. Fifty archival photographs of George-several
new images are contained in this edition-capture a journey of creative
and spiritual transformation. Brimming with the wit, warmth, and
grace that characterized his lyrics and his life, "I, Me, Mine"
is a treasured portrait of George Harrison and his music.

A limited edition publication, which features
the reproduction of 53 postcards sent by John Lennon, Paul McCartney
and George Harrison to Ringo Starr. The superb facsimile reproductions
of the cards, complete with the occasional drawing, depict both
the spontaneous wit and art of The Beatles. The reproduction of
the postcards is supplemented with a revealing text from Ringo explaining
the meaning behind the cards and documenting the corresponding moments
of his life. "This book is a presentation of postcards the
boys have sent me over the years," said Ringo¯and we are
lucky to have these postcards, because it was such a surprise to
me to find them and we only have them because one of my secretaries
decided to put them in a box and keep them. Now I have them and
I hope you have as much joy as I did seeing them. What's incredible
about them is that some are actual art pieces that would only ever
have been sent to Ringo."

John Lennon
A collection of short stories and poems. 1964.
You might well arsk. There are
no flies on this Frank. I was bored on the 9th of Octover 1940 when,
I believe, the Nasties were still booming us led by Madolf Heatlump
(who only had one). Anyway they didn't get me. I attended to varicous
schools in Liddypool. And still didn't pass -- much to my Aunties
supplies. As a member of the most publified Beatles my (P, G, and
R's) records might seem funnier to some of you than this book, but
as far as I'm conceived this correction of short writty is the most
wonderfoul larf I've every ready. God help and breed you all. Ingram.
"Irreverent... and hilarious (New York Times)
this book will appeal to Lennon's thousands of fans and create instant
sales on its publication. Really Funny! It's full of funny, witty
little poems and drawings by John Lennon, with a few that were written
in partnership with Paul. The plays on words in this book are hilarious,
and add to the funniness. Only problem is, that at some parts the
humor may be a little hard to understand, but once you read it a
few times and really think on it, it'll eventually come to you.
This book is great. A real mind-bender. From "Snore Wife and
Some Several Dwarts" to "Last Will and Testicle"
this book will keep you laughing and hungry for more."
"At Woolton village fete I met him. I was
a fat schoolboy, and as he leaned an arm on my shoulder, I realized
that he was drunk. We were twelve then, but, in spite of his sideboards,
we went on to become teenage pals. Aunt Mimi, who had looked after
him since he was so high, used to tell me how he was cleverer than
he pretended, and things like that. He had written a poem for the
school magazine about a hermit who said, "as breathing is my
life, to stop I dare not dare." This made me wonder right away
- is he deep? He wore glasses so it was possible, and even without
them there was no holding him. "What 'bus?" he would say
to howls of appreciative laughter. He went to QuarryBank High School
for Boys and later attended to the Liverpool Art College. He left
school and played with a group called The Beatles, and, here he
is with a book. Again I think - is he deep? Is he arty, with it,
or cultured? There are bound to be thickheads who will wonder why
some of it doesn't make sense, and others who will search for hidden
meanings. "What's a brummer?" "There's more to "dubb
owld boot" than meets the eye. None of it has to make sense
and if it seems funny then that's enough.
Paul
P.S. I like the drawings too.
John Lennon, Jann S. Wenner
Rolling Stone founder and Publisher Jann Wenner has finally released
the complete John Lennon interview he conducted for the magazine
in 1971. In the interview, John discusses the Beatle breakup, his
anger with Paul and George, his experimentation with LSD and heroin,
and how Yoko was despised by the group. A 30 year old Lennon is
very angry in his first post-Beatle interview, sitting down to plug
his "Imagine" album. Some great moments though, like John
criticizing Mick Jagger for knocking The Beatles, saying that he
(John) is the only one allowed to knock The Beatles. You can hear
up to 45 minutes of audio from the original interview by logging
on to Rolling Stone. Lennon was mercurial, that is, his mood shifted
over time and had several different public careers. There was the
moptop Lennon in 1964, the psychedelic Lennon in 1967, the hairy
Lennon in 1969, the drunk Lennon in 1974, and the domestic comeback
Lennon in 1980.
But in 1970, it was the angry Lennon who underwent
primal scream therapy and tried to cut off all ties with the Beatles,
badmouthing nearly everyone from his past in an effort to forge
a new public persona: the man who wanted peace and to exorcise his
demons. He exorcises them here. Interesting glimpse into Lennon's
world. Colored by the recent break-up of The Beatles, Lennon
Remembers can't completely be taken at face value. Lennon himself
later dismissed many of the comments he makes in the book. Still,
there are many sections where Lennon comes clean about The Beatles
and his own problems. While it lacks objectivity, "Lennon Remembers"
does provide a snapshot glimpse into The Beatles and their contemporaries
that other books fail to do. Lennon would later retract many of
the things he said and elaborate on why he fibbed or didn't tell
the whole story.
For a fuller, more complete view of The Beatles
and Lennon, I'd recommend Lennon's Playboy interview published
shortly before his death as well as The Beatles Anthology. Lennon
himself was initially upset when Werner published these interviews
in book form as he agreed to do them provided that didn't occur.
"John Lennon pours out his heart in this book. It's touching.
The portrait you get of him is remarkably intimate. It doesn't matter
if all the info is right or not. The picture it gives you is John
Lennon at the time of the interview: how he felt and thought. It's
intriguing.

Selected
by bestselling author Joey Green, a collection of 400 quotes
by Marx and Lennon, juxtaposed to reveal their hilarious similaritiesNo,
not THAT Marx and Lenin! Here+s a much funnier and artistically
talented pair from history. Revolutionaries in their own rights,
John Lennon and Groucho Marx did not share much common ground with
their Communist namesakes, or even with each other. Where they do
overlap is through their very humorous and irreverent takes on life.
Editor Joey Green brings together a collection of more than 400
Groucho Marx and John Lennon sayings, juxtaposed to emphasize their
hysterical and unexpected similarities. Joey Green, the bestselling

By May Pang and Henry Edwards
This is the story of Lennon's 18-month affair with May Pang, a relationship
she claims continued even after Lennon returned to his wife. On
his "Lost Weekend," he traveled with her to L.A. to record
music and party with other musicians like Harry Nilsson. It was
a boozy, decadent period that saw Lennon ejected from a nightclub
for interrupting a performance and generally hit the bottle in a
manner in which he hadn't since he was a youth. Sadly it confirms
something often glossed over in other Lennon biographies - That
Lennon was a mean drunk. The man of peace could turn into a foul-mouthed,
dangerous, nasty and violent drunk who needed to be tied up by his
friends until he sobered up.
Pang writes of their relationship with affection
and brutal honesty. Her pen chronicles, not only the facts but her
emotions and reactions to the events as they unfolded. It's a lesser
known fact that she was the Lennon's personal assistant in the early
1970s and she recounts stories about the making of the original
"Imagine" film and Yoko's experimental films like "Fly."
However, it's the Lost Weekend period that really makes this book
a worthwhile purchase.
Yoko can never write about this time because,
for most part, she wasn't there. Pang was. She writes about: the
"Rock and Roll" sessions with madcap record producer
Phil Spector; Lennon's difficult relationship with first
wife Cynthia and son Julian; seeing a UFO in New York; the booze
sessions with Harry Nilsson including the infamous incident
at the Troubadour Club; the "Walls and Bridges"
album and the comeback performance at Madison Square Garden
with Elton John.
While with Lennon, she also encountered other
rock celebrities and tells of the times Lennon holidayed with Keith
Moon and Ringo Starr, socialized with Mick and Bianca
Jagger, played music again with Paul McCartney, got verbally
berated by George Harrison, met and recorded with David
Bowie, and Elton John, upset Paul Simon and annoyed
the Smothers Brothers.
Pang also debunks some of the common stories
we hear about John and Yoko and while she is forgiving of John,
portrays Yoko as a manipulative, scheming dragon lady. An image,
not unfamiliar to Beatle fans, and one which Ono has tried hard
to erase.

Bob Gruen
In his bio on the flap copy, Bob Gruen is described as one of the
world's best rock and roll photographers. Modesty aside, Gruen is
the world's best rock and roll photographer, and his eye for the
prize shot is on full display in this collection of photos and remembrances
of Lennon, who was Gruen's friend as well as his favorite subject.
From the legendary shot of Lennon on a rooftop clad in the now iconic
New York City T-shirt to a heart-wrenching shot of a young Sean
Lennon curled up in Yoko's bed not long after John's murder, both
Lennon's and Gruen's geniuses are exhibited here. - Publishers

Larry Kane
Running Press
An insider's story on touring with the Beatles in 1964 and 65. In
1964 and 65 Larry Kane was living every Beatle fans fantasy, he
was traveling with them one-on-four, if you will, as an official
press reporter for WFUN radio in Miami as well as 40 other radio
stations who depended on Larrys daily feeds to keep their
listeners up to date on what The Beatles were up to. Larry had exclusive
access to The Beatles and saw a side of them that few others enjoyed.
They shared limo rides, hung out backstage, had lunch and dinner
together and even got into pillow fights on their chartered flights
between cities. Now, Beatle Brunch is proud to get behind Larrys
new book Ticket to Ride , an upbeat blast on tour with
The Beatles from August of 64 through the end of 65 and part of
66. While anyone can write a book about The Beatles, only Ticket
to Ride comes with an audio fingerprint, a 60 minute CD featuring
Larrys exclusive on-microphone interviews with John, Paul,
George and Ringo, plus Brian Epstein, Neil Aspinal, Derek Taylor
and Ivor Davis. Youll read and hear about what the fans would
offer Larry to get to The Beatles, what it was like traveling from
city to city besieged by fans, the night the boys met Elvis and
their impressions of him, and behind the scenes stories on how thoughtful
and caring The Beatles were toward their fans. But most of all,
youll get a sense of what it was like at more than 60 Beatles
concerts from San Francisco to New York, Vancouver to Jacksonville
and everywhere in between. Many Beatle Brunch listeners will also
be pleased to find their personal stories of seeing The Beatles
in concert highlighted in Ticket to Ride. It is a fascinating
journey inside The Beatles circle as told by one of the few ever
permitted inside. Included also are even many behind-the-scenes
photographs that have never been published.

Larry Kane
- Temple University Press
Only a chosen few were able to penetrate the Beatles inner circle,
and get close enough for some intimate conversation. One of those
lucky enough to make the cut was former WFUN-Miami newsman Larry
Kane, who spent 3 summers touring and interviewing The Beatles.
For the last 35 years, Kane's been the Dean of Television news in
Philadelphia, anchoring the 11 pm newscast at KYW TV, the CBS affiliate,
and his new book,
Larry Kane's Philadelphia, covers his outstanding
career as news anchor and community cheerleader in the City of Brotherly
Love. The book recalls his time with The Beatles on their U.S. tours
in 1964, '65 and part of '66, as well as a chapter on John Lennon's
participation in the 1975 "Helping Hands" radio marathon,
broadcast on WFIL throughout Philadelphia.
Larry Kane's Philadelphia is full of local references,
stories about the politicians in the city, and Larry's rise to the
lead anchor chair in Philly. Beatle fans will love Larry's story
of Lennon coming to town and the photos of Larry, John and Paul.
Larry Kane was one of the more intelligent and articulate Beatle
interviewers, who often asked the boys more important questions
than "when they were going to get a haircut".
You can get Larry's book in the "books and
media" section of buyphilly.com,
and listen to Beatle Brunch to win additional copies of the book
that we have to give away on future shows. Since his interview,
Larry has become a friend of the show. Listen for more interviews
with Larry in the coming months on Beatle Brunch on his new "Ticket
To Ride" book.

The fascinating story of the Beatles in
America on Vee-Jay Records before they were picked up by Capitol
Records.
In the limited time that Vee-Jay retained its
rights to sixteen Beatles songs, they managed to repackage them
into ten 45s, one EP, three variations of the first Beatles album,
two variations of a compilation album, and one elaborate double
album combining the Beatles and the Four Seasons

"We've got this thing called Apple, which is going to be records,
films and electronics." John Lennon
In May of 1968, John Lennon and Paul McCartney flew to New York City
to promote the Beatles' home-grown business venture, Apple Corps.
The following August, Apple Records released its first single, Hey
Jude / Revolution. This was followed 3 months later by The
White Album. Apple went on to issue an impressive collection
of Beatles singles and albums in 1969 and 1970. This book covers the
records issued on the Apple label in America from 1968 through 1970,
as well as the Red and Blue hits collections from 1973 and the triumphant
return of Apple in the 90's. The book concludes with the phenomenally
successful Beatles 1 released at the true end of the
millennium in late 2000. The Beatles on Apple Records is the 4th installment
of Bruce Spizer's critically acclaimed series on the Beatles

The Beatles Solo on Apple Records is the fifth installment of Bruce
Spizers critically acclaimed series on the Beatles American
records and the companion piece to The Beatles on Apple Records.
There's no question about it. Bruce Spizer has claimed
the title of the ultimate Beatles historian. Exhaustive research
goes into every one of his Beatles books. The Beatles Solo on Apple
Records is no exception. Bruce has meticulously detailed all of
the Beatles solo releases in this exceptional tome. As with his
other books, this one is beautifully illustrated with thousands
of photographs, record labels, and picture sleeves. The details
of research in this volume is superb. If you buy only one Beatles
book this year, make sure it is this one

Spizer, a tax attorney, Beatles historian, and contributor
to various Beatles fan magazines, offers this meticulously researched
follow-up to The Beatles Records on Vee-Jay (498 Prods., 1998).
His study of the Beatles' American recordings on Capitol Records
is two-fold. This work, Part 1, examines 45 rpm singles from 1964's
"I Want To Hold Your Hand" to 1968's "Lady Madonna"
(the last Capitol release before the Beatles launched Apple Records).
Part 2, scheduled for fall 2000, will cover the Beatles' LPs. Three
sections make up this title: how Capitol finally agreed to release
Beatles records in the United States after rejecting the first four
British hits; a breakdown of each single release with explanations
and photographs of each issued label and picture sleeve variation,
complete with coverage of Capitol's Beatles-related novelty singles,
Canadian releases, and counterfeit records; and, lastly, a history
of Capitol and other Capitol miscellany. The forthcoming book will
contain information that will apply to this title, e.g., a chapter
on identifying pressing plants based on information etched in the
plastic discs. Hundreds of source documents from Capitol's files
are reproduced, such as Capitol's first Beatles press release. In
2001, Spizer plans to write a history of the Beatles on Apple Records.
Spizer's works are indispensable for serious Beatles collectors
but of limited appeal to casual fans; recommended for libraries
with large pop music/Beatles collections.
Bruce Spizer
The Albums, pick up where the Part
1 left off, this time covering all the Beatles albums released on
Capitol Records. Spizer's exhaustive narrative on the Capitol story
is complete, right down to the catalog and label numbers of all
the LPs.
One highlight of the book is Spizer's three full
pages on the infamous Butcher Cover LP, or Yesterday and Today,
its official title. The section includes outtake photos and the
story on how the album came out and what Capitol did to try and
stop it because of the "Butcher Cover" .
No Beatles library is complete without Spizer's
reference books (this third in a series on the Beatles vinyl). Fans
who don't plan on reading every minute detail about numbers in run-off
grooves, will at least love the full color photos of the album covers,
including the many import versions. Spizer's work is so well respected
that if you look closely, you'll find him listed in the liner notes
of the new Beatles 1 CD.

The Beatles Are Coming! is the 5th book by Beatles author/historian
Bruce Spizer. The book covers the Beatles first visit to the United
States and the events leading up to the arrival on February 7, 1964.
The book is 246 pages and contains over 450 images,
including many previously unpublished photos of the Beatles as well
as never-seen-before documents.
The book will be simultaneously published in
both a limited hardbound edition and a paperback edition, both measuring
9" x 12" and having color throughout.
|
| |
|

The sixth and final installment of Bruce Spizers
books on the Beatles American records, this book covers all of the
groups U.S. releases on labels that had the rights to only
a limited number of Beatles recordings.
It is the first book to accurately tell the stories
behind the Beatles discs released by Swan, United Artists, Decca,
MGM, Atco and Polydor. It also has an extensive section on Capitol
Records in the 70s & 80s.

Geoff Emerick
As witness to one of the Beatles first recording
sessions ("How Do You Do It?"), Emerick paints a fascinating
picture of the individual dynamics and personalities of each Beatle
in the recording studio.
Paul was the easiest to get along with, a true
workaholic in the studio who, curiously enough was pegged as "the
leader" by Geoff Emerick during the early sessions.
John was often impatient, but curiously enough - it was always a
new Lennon song that was first recorded for each new album session!
Later, John's impatience actually paid off when they discovered
they were one song short for completion of Revolver - they quickly
finished John's "She Said She Said". Other tales include
a funny story of the "fan siege" during the recording
of "She Loves You" in which fans were running loose at
EMI - which gave Emerick a first-hand view of Beatlemania and he
comments that this "atmosphere" seemed to lend to the
electricity of the recording.
George Harrison was probably the least 'at ease'
in the recording studio and had problems nailing his solos, such
as his solo on "A Hard Day's Night". Ringo was basically
quiet in the studio.
Emerick takes you behind the scenes of EMI in
the '60s and exposes several of their antiquated and often outrageous
rules, such as the rules regarding microphone placement (which he
helped break and changed the way artists forever recorded in the
process!). Another hilarious rule was the dress code- white lab
coats for the maintenance staff and brown coats for the janitorial
staff.

There are countless books written on The Beatles, and hundreds of
books about The Beatles, their art and films that kids would enjoy,
but never has a Beatle book spoken directly to the new generation
of Beatle fans
until now.
In the Teenagers Guide to The Beatles, author Zane Lalani
has taken the Beatles facts, and made them easy to digest for young
fans, chronologically spelling out the history of the Fab Four for
those ages 10 and above.
Lalanis book is well written and researched, full of accurate
information that not only the younger set will appreciate, but even
older readers who arent as Beatle savy as the regular fest
attendees are, will find it helpful and easy to absorb. The
chapters are divided into short topics with relevant photographs
and album covers. Sidebars with interesting trivia are scattered
throughout the book. The emotions the fans felt during Beatlemania
are conveyed through newspaper headlines, stories, and fan interviews.
The 1960s' decade was turbulent and full of controversy, and the
Beatles had their share of controversies. The book doesnt
shy away from the controversial issues the Beatles faced, but the
author explains the issues in an appropriate manner for the age
group and leaves out altogether some topics that are more appropriate
for mature readers. Beatle Brunch parents, librarians, teachers,
and other adults can feel comfortable that the book is safe to read
for pre-teens and teens alike.
Screaming fans, Beatles lunchboxes, Beatles action figures, and
shiny molasses-colored LPs are, for many music fans, cherished memories
of a revolution. For many in todays generation, however, they're
subjects studied in history class. Teenagers Guide to the Beatles
brings history back to life taking the reader into age of Beatlemania.

About the author:
Zane Lalani, a second generation Beatles fan living on the Tampa
area, wrote this book for his teenage daughter. Seeing a young Beatles
fan fall in love with the music without understanding its origins
inspired him to tap the keyboard and tap a resource of material
suitable for her age group. It's a very well balanced book and a
wholesome, off-kilter romp through the lives of four superstars.
It stays simple and personal, light-hearted and fun through every
page.

"The Beatles: 10 Years that Shook the World" is
the closest we've come to a new "Beatles Anthology" since
the Fabs penned the story themselves four years ago. "10 Years"
brings together the memories of many Beatles insiders, friends,
photographers, authors and fellow musicians who offer an insider's
perspective on life in a fish bowl, experienced by The Beatles and
those around them. The book gives detailed
insight into the early childhood of the Fab Four by Lennon's college
friend Bill Harry, and closes with an analysis of what The
Beatles meant in the 1970's by famed journalist Nick Kent.
"10 Years" examines the private and public events that
revolutionized the music world and led to The Beatles domination
of the music industry. You'll see rare and only recently published
photos, with captions written by the photographers themselves, and
memorabilia, tour and publicity shots, along wtih album covers.
Also included, are new, in-depth reviews of the albums and films
describing the impact at the time. Read three original reviews of
"Sgt. Pepper", and take in behind the scenes accounts,
combined with fantastic photographs that give the Beatle fan the
story and narrative behind the famed images.
The books' forward is written by fellow musician
and Beatle fan Brian Wilson, whose work with The Beach Boys
helped propel The Beatles into the Sgt. Pepper phase. Paul McCartney
is still close with Brian and recently sang and played on a song
on Brian's new album "Gettin' in Over My Head".
Other contributors include, Donovan, who
accompanied The Beatles to India in 1968 and remained close with
George until his death in 2001; Hunter Davies, who wrote
the first official Beatles biography in 1968; Bill Harry,
who attended Liverpool College of Art with John Lennon and founded
"Mersey Beat" magazine; Mark Lewishohn, author
of many books on The Beatles including "The Complete Beatles
Recording Sessions"; Robert Whitaker, commissioned by
Brian Epstein to photograph The Beatles, including shooting the
infamous "Butcher Cover" photo in 1966; Larry Kane,
friend of Beatle Brunch and author of "Ticket to Ride"
and an upcoming expose on John Lennon; Mark Ellen, broadcaster
and journalist and founding father of "Q", "Mojo
Magazine" and "Word", plus many other authors and

Pete Best
Every Beatle fan knows about the "Cavern Club" in Liverpool
and its importance in the history of The Beatles beginnings.
But most fans dont know that The Beatles really began at a
basement coffee house in West Derby, Liverpool, where their drummer
Pete Best
lived. The club was called The
Casbah and it was the brainchild of Pete Bests
mom, Mona Best.
The book is written by Roag
Best and his brothers Pete and Rory, and tells the story
of the humble beginnings of The
Casbah Club, where The Beatles played some 90 times, first
as The Quarrymen, then as The Silver Beatles and finally,
as The Beatles. The book is filled with hundreds of fascinating
photos of The Casbah, which has been preserved for more than 40
years in the cellar of the old Best home. The walls still retain
the artistic paint brush that John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George
Harrison gave it when it opened on August 29th, 1959. A wealth of
rare material from The Casbah and the Bests own archives is
sprinkled throughout the book, accompanied by a fascinating personal
memoir of this extraordinary time, plus historic photographs of
much of original equipment from the club.
It was mother Mona Bests idea to open a coffee
house where the kids could gather together and play. Its where
Pete Best first played with The Beatles, then accompanied them on
their musical journey to Hamburg in 1960. The Beatles then
played the Casbah upon their return to Liverpool in 1962.
The club remained open until Pete was dismissed by The Beatles in
August of 1962.
Its contents were boxed up and the basement club closed,
until recently when Pete and his brothers uncovered all of this
important memorabilia of that time, to reopen
the club as a museum and tribute to their mother, who passed
away in 1988. The book's opening comments are written by Paul McCartney,
who recognizes the importance of the Casbah in the early days of
The Beatles with enthusiastic memories of the club. The Bests plan
to re-open the club for acoustic performances and specials guest
appearances. Listen to Beatle Brunch to win your copy of the book!

Spencer Leigh, Northdown Publishing
The story of Pete's abrupt departure from the soon-to-be Fab Four.
Why was The Beatles original drummer
fired and replaced with Ringo Starr in August of 1962, just as The
Beatles were about to hit it big? If he was "no good"
as some say, then why did he last two years? Was Ringo really a
better drummer? Or was Manager Brian Epstein upset that Best refused
his advances?
BBC Radio Merseyside's local music aficionado,
Spencer Leigh, attempts to answer all these questions and
more by interviewing everyone he could drum up who was associated
with Best at one time or another in his hometown of Liverpool. They
only subject he avoids contacting is Pete himself, though there
are some previous quotes from Pete in the book. The result is an
extremely thorough examination of the Liverpool music scene at the
time and the presentation of nearly 100 opinions on Pete's drumming
and the opinions on his firing. The book gives great background
on Pete and his family's
importance to the music scene in the early 60's, and how Best
might have been "used" by The Beatles to get to the next
step. Pete's house, after all, was one of the few in town that had
a phone, a crucial connection for booking The Beatles. The reader
is left to ultimately make up their own mind about a bandmate and
friend who was left on the Liverpool dock as the big ship was about
to depart.

The Story of Bob Wooler, Liverpool's First
DJ
This book is full of Bobs
first hand accounts. Brimming with his Woolerisms, always acute,
and often very funny observations on the early days of Mersey Beat.
It also includes his views on the Liverpool world of The Beatles,
The Searchers, The Merseybeats, and Gerry And The Pacemakers, to
name but a few of the literally hundreds of beat groups Liverpool
spawned in those heady days. Wooler helped secure the Beatles' first
major gig in Liverpool after their return from Hamburg in 1960.
The "Cavern Club Compere" introduced them hundreds
of times on the Cavern Club stage.
Wooler became the permanent lunchtime Cavern
DJ after owner Ray McFall heard him introduce one of his bands with
the words, "Remember all you cave dwellers, the Cavern is the
best of cellars!" Wooler also dabbled in songwriting, penning
several country songs for Phil Brady & The Ranchers. He became
well-known as a sloganeer and publicity imager, twisting phrases
into what Liverpudlians termed "Woolerisms." Among the
most-famous is one of his his slogans for the Cavern-era Beatles:
"The Stuff That Screams Are Made Of." On December 3, 1961,
at the invitation of John Lennon, Wooler accompanied the Fab Four
to their first meeting with Brian Epstein at NEMS, and it was Wooler's
endorsement on which the band based their trust in Epstein. Brian
Epstein adopted a "Woolerism" as his official cable address
-- Wooler nicknamed the emperor of NEMS "Nemporer." When
Epstein & his stable relocated to London, Wooler was invited
along, but chose to stay in his native Liverpool, promoting Merseyside
music long after the London record industry lost interest.
At Bob Woolers funeral, both Spencer Leigh
and others reminisced about a few of the many memories Bob left
behind. Spencer also admitted that there was one more thing he would
have liked Bob to have left behind. This was a letter revealing
exactly what was said and done during Bobs infamous and violent
bust up with John Lennon at Paul McCartneys 21st birthday
party. Suffice to say that the recent TV film biopic The John
Lennon Story, though featuring the incident, does not adequately
explain just what did happen. Surely, another reason to buy Spencers
book. After the incident, John Lennon and Bob Wooler remained on
friendly terms.

At the time the Beatles Anthology project was
launched in November, 1995, with the broadcast of the ABC-TV special
and the release of the Anthology 1 CD, it was announced that an
Anthology book would be available in late 1996. When the Anthology
time table got pushed back, so did the book's publication date.
Every year there was talk that the book would be out for the Christmas
season. Finally, four years after its planned release date, The
Beatles Anthology Book is here. And now that THE BOOK is finally
here, and Number One on the NY Times Bestseller list, does it contain
any new revelations and is worth owning? While most of the information
in the book will be a refresher course for Beatle experts, there
is so much information in the book's 365 pages that even the most
devout Beatle fan will learn something.
The Beatles Anthology Book is presented as an
oral history, with a series of well chosen and well placed quotes
from John, Paul, George and Ringo, George Martin, Derek Taylor,
Neil Aspinall, Mal Evans and others associated with the group. While
the surviving Beatles have the luxury of looking back and putting
things into perspective, the quotes from John vary in tone depending
on when he was interviewed. Sometimes his anger and bitterness seems
inappropriate. Other times his wit cuts through brilliantly. We
wonder what he would say now. "The Threetles" (PG&R)
don't sugar coat everything either.
George's resentment at being treated as a "second
class song writer" comes through. Paul admits that at times
he could be bossy, while Ringo comes across as the one most at peace
with what went on all those years ago. Because the book is an oral
history, it is not the definitive account of the Beatles time together.
It is neither scholarly nor all-inclusive. It is the story of Beatlemania
as the Beatles have decided to remember it, and that's not necessarily
a negative. It's supposed to be their story. After all, the author
is "The Beatles." The important thing to know is that
it is a story worth reading.
The opening biography sections on each Beatle
are fascinating. We get to know what each was like growing up. We
are reminded that John had character flaws and that Ringo was lucky
to have survived his childhood illnesses. By the time the quotes
move to the band's stay in Germany, we are presented with a series
of stories regarding the rough conditions of their formative years
and some of their sexual experiences.
When Beatlemania strikes, we hear what the Beatles
thought of those wonderfully insane years. In later pages we are
treated with stories of how the songs evolved in the studio. By
the end of The Anthology, we hear from all four about the break
up of the band.

On December 4, 1967, 23 year old Paul Saltzman
boarded a plane bound for Rishikesh, India, where he was planning
to study under the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, hoping to heal the pain
of a broken heart. What he didn't expect, was to share his time
with four of the most influential figures in pop music. Saltman's
The Beatles in Rishikesh is a narrative and photographic story of
his time in India with The Beatles in the spring of 1968, and includes
75 previously unpublished photos documenting this unique time, including
many photos of The Beatles composing songs for "The White Album"
on acoustic guitar. The photos are not only captivating, they are
some of the most beautiful photographs ever taken of the Beatles.
Saltzman never planned to make the pictures public,
in fact, he had forgotten about them, until his teenage daughter
became interested in The Beatles. When she remembered that he had
told her he had taken some photos of the Beatles, she insisted on
seeing them, and convinced her dad to publish the photos. The Beatles
in Rishikesh presents another side of the group just before the
breakup. It shows Paul and John enjoying each others company. It
also includes many wonderful photos of the landscape and surrounding
area, as well as Saltzman's personal memoir of this magical episode.
Saltzman was recently featured at Beatlefest
where he was one of the most popular guest speakers of the weekend.
He told Beatle Brunch that he plans to offer large prints of his
photos for sale in the near future. You can hear Saltman's interview
and get an opportunity to win a copy of the book on the April 15th
edition of Beatle Brunch as we feature "The Beatles in India".

Sid Bernstein/Arthur Aaron
With the recent release of The Beatles Anthology
Book, it seems everyone who's ever met the Beatles has written a
book. Sid Bernstein was a driving force behind some of the biggest
names in the entertainment world, including the Fabs, and now he's
written (along with Arthur Aaron) "Not Just the Beatles",
the story of his association with the show business greats of our
time.
Bernstein was responsible for booking The Beatles
at New York's Carnegie Hall on their first U.S. visit in February
of 1964.A year later, he convinced Brian
Epstein to let him book the Beatles into Shea Stadium, creating
the largest concert event at the time, and the first ever stadium
rock show. He brought The Beatles back to Shea again in 1966. In
the 70's, Berstein tried to reunite The Beatles for a live performance
by making them a huge cash offer.
Bernstein has was at the Meadowland's Beatlefest
celebration, where he entertained crowds with his stories of The
Beatles and Brian Epstein. Bernstein made most of his money managing
The Rascals, and was also instrumental in the success of the careers
of Tony Bennett and others.

aplenty on the 20th century's most influential rock band. 368 Pages.

opened at the Tate Gallery, Liverpool. The exhibition contains collages
by Peter Blake, who organized the exhibition, and other artists.

book is divided into 4 sections, detailing a chronological history
of The Beatles in London, a walking tour of the major Beatles sites,
a tour by car and further visitor information relating to The Beatles
in London.
Robert Rosen
This latest book on John Lennon has already found itself the subject
of controversy. Robert Rosen has written his account of John's "Dakota
Days" based on his knowledge of what was in Lennon's personal
diaries, which were stolen from John's home by his personal assistant
Frederic Seaman, just after Lennon's death in 1980. Seaman told
his friend Rosen that the pair should collaborate on a book which
would be based on the diaries. Seaman was later sentenced to five
year's probation. Although the diaries were returned to Yoko Ono,
Rosen had transcribed the volumes based on his memories of them,
but stresses that he has not used any actual material from the journals.
Rosen takes the same route as Albert Goldman and his book, "The
Lives Of John Lennon", by continually concentrating on the
negative aspects of John's life. "Nowhere Man" also takes
a nasty and unnecessary detour into the circumstances surrounding
his death. What could have been one of the most revealing books
on John turns out to be a damp disappointment.
Jon Weiner
This book tells the story of the author's fourteen year battle to
win release of the Lennon files under the Freedom Of Information
Act in a case that went all the way to the Supreme Court. With the
publication of Gimme Some Truth, 100 key pages of the Lennon FBI
file are available complete and unexpurgated. The Nixon administration's
efforts to "neutralize" Lennon are the subject of Lennon's
file. Documents are reproduced in facsimile so that readers can
see all the classification stamps, marginal notes, blacked out passages
and in some cases the initial of J. Edgar Hoover. The file includes
lengthy reports by confidential informants detailing the daily lives
of anti-war activists, memo's to the White House, transcripts of
TV shows on which Lennon appeared, and a proposal that Lennon be
arrested by local police on drug charges. 312 pages. Softback
